If you’re looking for top tips on building your business website, Expert Insights has the answers.
As in other aspects of business, your website must help you rise ABOVE your competitors. When developing content for your site, it’s best to consider the “Do’s and Don’ts” as well as other advice.
A common question we get from clients is , “What should I put on my home page?” Your home page content is of utmost importance on your site as well as the method of it’s communication and it’s overall presentation. Remember, the home page is the FIRST and could very well be the ONLY page on your site your potential customers see!
The Pictures, videos, slide shows, text, headings, and other content all must be of the highest quality. That said, we recommend a good mixture of “all of the above” when considering content for your home page.
Speaking of pictures – SKIP THE CELL PHONE SELFIES! It is absolutely critical that you have very professional images on your home page. If you cannot hire a photographer or produce your own images, Expert Insights can help you procure or create professional images to give your site a more polished and professional look. Pictures on your website should serve a purpose and be related to the content if at all possible. Avoid using pictures as a way to represent written content (I.E pictures of your service menu or a picture of your business description). Google and other search engines will not index text inside of an image which will drastically hurt your chances of being found online!
Videos are also important and can really add a nice “touch” to your home page, but don’t overdo it! A quick informative video highlighting your business or even a commercial is a nice touch. We’ve even utilized slow motion “drone flybys” in the hero section of home pages to add a very high-tech and modern touch.
When considering your written content, our recommendation is to not put too much content in any one place on your site. In other words, spread out your content to relevant pages and organize your site to best represent your business. Rather than listing all of your services on your “About Us” page, consider moving them to a page called “services.” If you sell 100 products, don’t cram them all on your home page; highlight your most popular 5-10 items, and list the rest on a “products” page organized by categories and attributes. It might confuse your reader or you might loose their focus if you include too many items on any one page of the site. Additionally, a “busy” page may take longer to load which could eventually hurt your standing on Google as well. Aside from load times, Google also cares about the “relevance” of your content and ranks your site accordingly.
On the other hand, not having enough information might turn your customers away as they won’t find what they are looking for. When your customers search for the services your business offers, they need to be able to identify it quickly. That is why our clients will often hear us use the phrase “content is key;” not too much, not too little, and not overly complex.
If you struggle to determine that perfect balance of content for your business website, we are hear to help! We will consult with your team to understand the bread and butter of your business and help you to determine what should or should not be displayed on your site. Your audience should learn the important services offered by your business in a quick, concise, and enjoyable manner. Your customers should be able to find you easily when searching for similar services in their area and should be able to understand what your business offers within seconds of visiting your website. On the present day “world wide web” competition is hard. Turning someone who is simply viewing your website into an actual paying customer requires not only dedication and competence, but also presentation.
